James Derk, a news writer with The Evansville (Ind.) Press and son of Walter Derk, MCAA's insurance consultant, has been named News Writer of the Year by Scripps-Howard Newspapers. The award earned him a $1,000 prize and a plaque in the annual competition. The Press matched the Scripps-Howard cash prize to the 23-year-old reporter, making the award worth $2,000. A graduate of Southern Illinois Uiversity, Derk was honored for his reports on the fatal crash of an Air Illinois plane last October in which 10 people died. Contest judges praised Derk's stories for having led to a general tightening of air safety regulations and enforcement. "His enterprise made the airways safer for others," the judges said.
