PROJECT DOCUMENTATION
continued from page 25
Claims and disputes are usually decided on the evidence contained in the project documentation.
During any phase of the construction project, the general rule is: "If in doubt, write!" If you attend a meeting where no one else keeps a set of minutes, write and circulate your version to establish a record and give the other parties an opportunity to object to your version if they wish. If someone else writes the minutes and you do not agree, object in writing immediately.
Write, Read What Others Write; If You Disagree Write Again
Though honorable men may forget or differ in their understanding of what took place during the course of a project, when the facts are clearly and irrefutably established, disputes are generally resolved in a reasonable and amicable manner, and differences of opinion do not necessarily have to lead to open warfare.
Illinois Brick Sculptors
The winners of a recent Construction Products Manufacturers Council sculptured brick competition are shown here with their entry. The masonry brick logo of Schmidt Garden & Erickson, Chicago, III., was fired by Endicott Brick Co., Fairbury, Neb. Pictured (from left) are Cecil Reilly of Beck Sunray, Inc., Des Plaines, III., who presented the completed sculpture to Gay Debeck. Alan Cato and Martin Zarpa of Schmidt, Garden & Erickson.
About Our Cover
Loebl Schlossman & Hackl Architects, Chicago, III., claimed a Silver Medal Award for its design of West Suburban Plaza at West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park. III., as part of the Illinois Indiana Masonry Council's recent Excellence In Masonry architectural awards program.
The Plaza's interesting angles, red brick facade and ribboned windows create a significant new addition to Oak Park's collection of striking architecture. The design also incorporates atriums and skylights to create a warm and pleasant environment for patients, visitors and staff.
In addition to solving a series of complicated medical functions, the client wanted the facility to blend with the area's residential character. "To accomplish this, brick was selected," explained Donald J. Hackl. FAIA. "As an important design element, brick achieves visual continuity with the original structure which was built in 1911, and it strengthens the new building's identity with the entire campus.
"Brick was also used extensively on the interior to extend this continuity and to take advantage of its low maintenance and durability characteristics," Hackl said. "The familiar and tactile quality of the brick lends warmth and a non-institutional quality to the building."
Pepper Construction Co. was the mason contractor on the project.
