If such efforts can lead to putting a lid on damage awards, limit punitive damages to one-time punishment for conscious wrong-doing, limit contingent lawyers' fees and pass unsuccessful litigation cost back to the plaintiff, much of the social problem we have now will go away. George Miller, executive vice president of MCAA, reported on his participation in a White House meeting which showed promise of leading to ultimate success in accomplishing such needed reforms. Without them, America's ability to compete with the rest of the world not similarly hamstrung by lawsuits and cross-lawsuits, will continue to be impaired to our long-standing detriment.
I recommend that you keep close to your local insurance person and ask for the best estimates of renewal rates and terms so that you may adjust your bids accordingly. Start renewing early and then fine-tune those figures as needed when they become firm. Certainly, it's time for a close dialogue with that local person representing your insurance interests in today's chaotic marketplace.
Standard Brick & Supply Relocates
An historical brick and glass block structure, the former People's Brewery building at 4231 W. 1st St., Duluth, Minn., is the new home of Standard Brick & Supply, Inc. The facility provides 3,000 sq. ft. of office and display space, 40,000 sq. ft. of yard area, and 30,000 sq. ft. of inside storage, according to owner Dick Whitney.
Whitney bought Standard Brick in 1975, and since then it has grown twelvefold. His firm represents more than two dozen brick manufacturers nationwide, and additionally handles masonry supplies and concrete specialty items.
