CONFERENCE REPORT
continued from page 10
Dr. Barney, in his capacity as Chairman of the Concrete and Masonry Fire Safety Committee, gave a report on the activities of this important body. Dr. Barney described the committee's structure and its major objective, that being to maintain and expand the use of concrete and masonry products based on their inherent fire-safe characteristics. The committee's current activities are 4-fold:
• Develop Support Materials
• Direct Mail to Building Officials
• Support Local Industry Groups
• Research
In addition, Dr. Barney discussed a comparison of fire deaths in various companies and the accompanying chart shows a comparison between the United States and countries in Europe. Efforts by the Fire Saftey Committee are doing much to enhance the marketplace for the masonry industry.
Ken Gutschick, Technical Director of the National Lime Association then introduced the next speaker, Dr. John H. Matthys, Director of the Construction Research Center at the University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Matthys presented an interim report entitled "Conventional Masonry Mortar Investigation."
The Construction Research Center is currently conducting a comparative performance study of portland cement lime (type-S lime) mortars to ASTM equivalent masonry cement mortars. The equivalency used in this investigation is based on the ASTM C-270 proportions by volume specification.
Steve Szoke, Technical Director National Accounts, then gave an overview of the NCMA National Accounts Program, going into detail as to its purpose, program and objective. Mr. Szoke indicated that shortly NCMA and MCAA will implement a co-operative program in the National Accounts field. He briefly summarized the efforts of NCMA in the paving market and indicated the great potential market that exists in the U.S.
The final speaker on Friday morning was Bill Weaver, Manpower Director of the Brick Institute of America. Mr. Weaver discussed "Bricklaying: Master the Craft and Make Your Mark." After introductory remarks Mr. Weaver presented for its inaugural presentation an audio visual, produced by BIA and NCMA targeted for high school students seeking a vocation. The 20 minute presentation is excellently designed to create an interest in the craft of bricklaying and one of the featured portions is a commentary by Dick Felice, MCAA Vice President.
The Trade Show again opened at 12 o'clock on Friday and continued on until 4:30. For a half hour. continued on page 15
