Third Stone Symposium
About 70 people came out to try their hand at carving a truckload of Bayer Stone limestone during the third Stone Symposium sponsored by Bayer Stone, Inc., the Kansas Sculptors Association and the City of Lawrence.
The Stone Symposium was conducted Oct. 1-2 in Burcham Park, Lawrence, Kansas, to promote interest in sculpture and the use of native Kansas limestone in art and architecture. All ages and all levels of experience from the beginner to the professional sculptor-were represented during the Symposium.
"It was a good two days," said Jim Patti, artist and Kansas Sculptors Association representative. "We're stimulating interest in carving limestone. The main thing is to get people to realize how easy it is to carve this stone and to stimulate interest in carving and in sculpture."
The Stone Symposium is conducted every two years in October by Bayer Stone and the Kansas Sculptors Association. This year the City of Lawrence joined in the sponsorship. Organizers are looking for a community that is interested in being the site for the 1990 Stone Symposium.
