Conference and Masonry Expo, on February 22 and 23. the Masonry Quality Institute held an intensive two day workshop at the convention hotel, the Atlanta Hilton and Towers, designed to assist the mason contractor in cutting costs, increasing profits and retaining customers by doing the job right the first time.

MCAA's Annual Conference was officially launched on Wednesday, February 22, with the first part of a "Computerized Estimating for A Profit" seminar and committee meetings from 8 am to 4 pm. The MCAA Executive Board met from 3:30 to 5 pm to discuss association activities and other industry matters.

Thursday, February 24, was devoted to the conclusion of the computer estimating seminar, and a three hour morning seminar on "Implementing A Safety Program That Works." Afternoon highlight was the MCAA Masonry Expo Golf Classic held at the Stouffer Pine Isle Resort, known worldwide as the host course for the Nestle World Championship.

Seven MCAA Workshops were featured all day on Friday, February 25. They were: The Modern Approach to Masonry; Proper Use of Anchors, Ties and Reinforcing; Why Quality-Because Your Customer Expects It; OSHA-Where Are They Going: OSHA Horror Stories; Contracts the Hidden Pitfalls; and Marketing Your Quality. Highlight of the evening was the Masonry Expo All Industry Reception at the Georgia World Congress Center, where attendees casually previewed the exhibits while enjoying all of the trappings of a first class reception.

MCAA President Richard Matthews delivered his State of the Association address, which highlighted the major accomplishments of his term in office and presented his vision of the future for the association at the MCAA Opening Session on Saturday, February 26, from 8 to 9:30 am. Also featured was special guest Warren Grehes who delivered a motivational address outlining the "Three Rs for Success." Keynote speaker at the all-industry luncheon from 11 am to 1 pm at the Georgia World Congress Center was former Marine Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North.

Masonry Expo '94 was officially opened following the ribbon cutting ceremonies, from 1 to 6 pm on Saturday. Products and services for every industry need, displayed by some 250 companies, were exhibited. Entries for Masonry Magazine's Excellence in Masonry People's Choice Awards were on display in the exhibit hall entryway, with all Expo attendees eligible to vote. A cocktail reception was held at the Atlanta Hilton and Towers for Masonry Magazine advertisers and Editorial Advisory Board members at the Atlanta Hilton and Towers Saturday evening.

Following a block plant and mortar bagging tour and two Masonry Expo seminars ("Troubleshooting Masonry" and "Masonry Restoration and Repair") on Sunday morning, February 27, the ever-popular and greatly expanded Material Handling Showcase featuring special aspects of rough terrain forklifts, scaffolding systems, mortar pumps and mixers, and other equipment drew an appreciative audience. The Expo was open from 12 noon to 6:00 pm on Sunday.

Donna Dobberfuhl, world renowned sculptor, was on hand at the Masonry Magazine/MCAA booth during all three days of the Expo, creating a work of art a brick sculpture mural-from ordinary workaday, unfired brick. After firing, the mural will be shipped to MCAA's Oak Brook, Illinois offices and installed in the association's conference room.

Featured social highlight Sunday evening was the MCAA Annual Banquet at the Atlanta Hilton and Tower, where industry leaders roasted outgoing President Richard Matthews and welcomed newly elected President Leonard Pardue and other officers.

Masonry Magazine's International Excellence in Masonry Competition Awards breakfast kicked off Monday, February 28th's activities from 7 to 8:30 am, at the Georgia World Congress Center. Mario Catini, President of Dur-O-Wall Corporation, presided at ceremonies honoring the winners of the competition, selected by balloting of all Masonry Expo attendees.

Team building, learning how to train your staff to understand customer requirements, establish goals and build teams, was the theme of Monday's seminar, from 8 am to 10 am. This was followed by the popular Fastest Trowel on the Block Competition, from 8:30 to 10 am, where last year's winner defended his title against five regional winners.

Exhibits opened for their final day on Monday from 10 am to 2 pm. Mike Adelizzi, MCAA Executive Director, reports that a record number of exhibitors at this year's show have already joined in early sign-up for next year's event.
