The Kirk-Van Orsdel Headquarters, located in West Des Moines, Iowa was named the second runner up in the Industrial-Commercial category of Masonry Magazine's International Excellence in Masonry Competition. The exterior of the building is granite, stone and glass while the interior is decorative block and glass block. The first of a three building corporate campus totaling 350.000 square feet, this building includes a cafeteria and kitchen capable of serving 700 persons per hour, and a computer facility supporting both IBM and Hewlett-Packard mainframes. Executive suites and a corporate board room feature state-of-the-art electronic media capability and an enclosed executive parking lot are also part of this facility. This building is highly energy efficient and incorporates the latest in heating/cooling technology with over 165 discrete HVAC zones controlled by a Novar DDC control system. The mason contractor on the project was Forrest and Associates of Des Moines, Iowa, while the general contractor was Taylor Ball. The masonry suppliers were Iowa Concrete Block and Cold Springs Granite and the architect was Environmental Design of West Des Moines.
