cation for the association, the development of a kit to assist in the recruiting of young people and the development of three training textbooks as a response to projected shortfalls in the future workforce. In addition, Pettit has served as State Chairman and Region 'B' Vice President to the national association.
Pettit has also served as past President and Secretary of Upper South Carolina Masonry Contractors Association where he remains active in promotion and recruitment.
John Doherty

John Doherty has been a force behind a three year apprenticeship training program with the Masonry Contractors Association of Georgia where nearly seventy-five apprentices have been trained since 1993. In addition, Doherty has been active in recruiting young people through visits to high schools and technical schools to help change the negative perception of young people toward the masonry industry.
Serving as Chairman of the chapters Finance Committee for roughly the past ten years, Doherty has the added responsibility of raising the funding to conduct the training programs. Doherty is most proud of the fact that the state association owns their own training facility where they conduct their training classes. He has also had the responsibility of serving as association President during the mid-eighties.
Jerry Painter

Jerry Painter has a list of activities too long for this article. He has well served the masonry industry in a wide variety of volunteer positions which include President of the Masonry Association of Florida from 1989 to 1992. He has served on both the Education and Training Committee as well as the Government Affairs Committee for the state chapter.
He has been highly active in mason recruitment and training by attending career days in area high schools. He was one of the guiding forces behind the establishment of the Masonry Association of Florida Training Program. In addition, he has taught apprenticeship classes as well as been a guest lecturer at numerous university classes.
He is a member of the Gainsville Rotary Club, a Board Member and Avenue Chair of Community Service and Chairman of Alachua County Codes Enforcement Board.
MIDWEST
Richard Matthews

Having served as President of MCAA during two progressive and turbulent years, Richard Matthews laid the groundwork for a renaissance for mason contractors nationally.
The groundwork for new national programs to recruit masons, training masons, impacting federal legislation and competing against alternate construction methods was laid during his tenure as National President. Matthews also served as Regional Vice President, and chaired numerous committees such as Membership, By Laws and Nominating.
Matthews has been active in local association efforts for over 20 years. During his service to the local chapter, Matthews served as chapter President, and on numerous committees including Apprenticeship where he has been active in training apprentices.
Matthews has also been deeply committed to promoting the industry while serving for 18 of the last 20 years as Chairman of the Masonry Institute of Dayton. He is most proud of the fact that Dayton has held architectural award programs every year for the past 20 years.
A key accomplishment is the designing of a masonry highway sound barrier wall which is being used by the State of Ohio. Matthews is also involved in the United Way as past captain and in the Hospice Program.
Robert Schuerman

Robert Schuerman was recently elected to his second term as Region 'C' Vice President to MCAA. During the past six years. Schuerman has served as Chairman of the MCAA Marketing Committee which has developed the publishing and marketing of an annual membership directory to architects. In addition, under his direction as Marketing Chairman, MCAA became active in referring its members to masonry customers through the associations member referral program.
Schuerman has been active with promotion and recruitment by establishing masonry demonstrations at area county fairs and visiting architects to discuss issues such as fire prevention and masonry impact on fire prevention.
Schuerman has served on the apprentice committee since 1980 and has taught local apprentice classes as well.
Edgar Boettcher

Edgar Boettcher has had varied involvement in both local and national activities. He currently serves as Chairman of the MCAA Insurance Committee and also served as Region "C' Vice President for several terms.
Locally, Boettcher served as Chairman of the Michigan Mason Contractors Association. In addition, he is active in promotion by serving as a Trustee of Masonry Institute of Michigan of which he serves as Chairman of the IMI/MIM Liaison Committee. Boettcher has been devoted to training area masons by serving as a former Trustee on the Local #7 Apprenticeship Committee as well as past Chairman of the Manpower and Training Committee.

Elected to a full two year term as Region 'D' Vice President for MCAA, Fred Kinateder has been on the forefront of promoting a stronger industry.
As current board director and past President for Mason Contractors Association of Milwaukee, Kinateder worked toward establishing a consistent training program which now boasts of training thirty-five masons annually.
