Industry Forms Alliance For Codes and Standards
Representatives of the masonry industry met to discuss a pending merger of all building code entities into the International Building Code which would ultimately replace BOCA and UBC codes currently being utilized.
After two meetings, the formation of the Masonry Alliance for Codes and Standards (MACS) will become the unified organization to consolidate the masonry industry's efforts to help develop the model standards which will be submitted to the International Codes Council.
The ICC will then approve and include MACS recommendations in the International Building Code to become the building standards for all construction beginning in January of 2000. The overall purpose of MACS would be to "coordinate, forge consensus, monitor and influence organizations that develop codes and standards related to the masonry industry." MACS will use the ACI 530 as the guide for developing the final document to be submitted to the ICC for final adoption.
The diverse group of individuals representing contractors, producers, trade associations and masonry institutes elected officers to represent MACS. Mark Hogan from the National Concrete Masonry Association was elected Chairman. Mark Nunn from the Brick Institute of America was elected Vice Chairman. Mark Kluver from Portland Cement Association elected Secretary and Robert (Buddie) Barnes representing the Mason Contractors Association of America was elected Treasurer.
