DEWALT SULUS CHAMPIONSHIP CHAMPION DEWALT
Competition medallists and technical committee representatives were all smiles following the awards ceremony.
Thirty-one high school and 16 junior college contestants from across the country, each of them winners of their own state of regional competition, competed in a written test then built their composite projects. The competition was judged by 13 trade professionals.
Donations of materials for the contest were provided by Ochs Brick, Miller Material: an Old Castle Co., Lone Star Cement and Spec Mix. Sustaining members and sponsors of the contest included Associated General Contractors of America, Bon Tool Co., the Brick Industry Association, the Mason Contractors Association of America, National Concrete Masonry Association, the Portland Cement Association and Spec Mix.
Other highlights of the three-day conclave included a luncheon for the contestants and their instructors. The keynote speaker, Bryan Light of the Southern Brick Institute, narrated a slide show entitled "I Built a Castle." The program traced Light's participation in the construction of a $3 million brick and granite home. Light and six other masons labored over four and a half years to complete the massive, yet intricate project. Following the luncheon, Bill Kjorlien conducted the Instructor's Roundtable.
A record number 4,000 vocational students, all state champions, competed in 69 different VICA trade, technical and leadership competitions. The contests effectively demonstrated their expertise in occupational skills required for such trades as electronics, technical drafting, precision machining and masonry.
In addition to the contestants, this year's event drew more than 8,000 visitors, including judges, faculty members and sponsors.
