Disaster Investigation
When a disaster strikes, TMS can dispatch a reconnaissance team to investigate the performance of masonry structures within hours. In the past, such investigations have been performed by a variety of masonry promotion groups. While these efforts were very effective at documenting performance, and helping to promote the masonry industry, they were however sometimes called into question because they were considered slanted and biased since they were conducted by the industry being affected by the performance data. Today, therefore, most investigations, while still supported by the industry, are conducted through TMS's Disaster Investigation Team. This group, which is made up of experts from all segments of the masonry community, has investigated the performance of masonry after a number of natural disasters including the Northridge Earthquake and Hurricane Opal, and the resulting reports have been highly regarded because they are impartial. They have, therefore, assisted in documenting successful performance, which can then be used by the industry to help promote the benefits of masonry construction. And on the other hand, TMS Investigations have also found some areas of concern, which could then be appropriately considered by the entire masonry community for possible future changes in the way we design and construct masonry.
FINAL THOUGHTS
TMS is a resource for all. And we hope to provide more and better products and services in the future. We are working on numerous projects now including an Annotated Guide to Masonry Specifications, an Inspection Checklist, a Masonry Maintenance Checklist, along with numerous seminars, workshops and standards development activities. It is our hope that these products and services will continue to advance the knowledge of masonry so that the industry continues to grow and thrive. For more information on TMS, and our activities, call the office at any time at (303) 939-9700. Or, one of the easiest ways to find out more about TMS is electronically by visiting our website at www.masonrysociety.org.
