Masonry Skills Challenge Regional Competitions Held
Regions all across the United States hosted the international Masonry Skills Challenge qualifying competitions. Five out of the nine regional occurred during October and November. Winners from these competitions are now eligible to compete in the international Masonry Skills Challenge, which will be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, February 24, 2001.
The international Masonry Skills Challenge is a competition of masonry apprentices in three skill levels: first year, second year and third year. The Challenge is a showcase for skills training in the masonry industry, pitting winning apprentices from regional U.S. and Canadian competitions to determine the top masonry apprentice in each skill level. The Challenge is designed to not only spotlight our industry's finest young masons, but also to spotlight careers in the masonry industry. Stone Construction Equipment Executive Named CIMA Chairman
Robert J. Fien, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Stone Construction Equipment, Inc., Honeoye, NY, has been elected 2001 Chairman of the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association (CIMA), the international trade group representing construction equipment manufacturers and construction services providers.
Also elected as 2001 CIMA officers were First Vice Chairman Gerard V. Geraghty, President Specialty Equipment of Ingersoll-Rand Co., Annandale, NJ; Second Vice Chairman M. J. "Thys" de Beer, Chairman of Nordberg, Inc., Milwaukee, WI; Treasurer Emil G. Kucera, President and Chief Executive Officer of Minnpar, Inc., Minneapolis, MN; and Secretary Dennis J. Slater, CIMA's full-time President.
The CIMA officers, with the Association's Board, set the guidelines and operating policies of the Association on behalf of its members in areas including international marketing, equipment statistics, government legislation and regulations, education, training, safety and technical services.
Phoenix, Arizona
The Region G Masonry Skills Challenge was held on October 14, 2000 in Pheonix, Arizona. Four first-year, three second-year and two third-year apprentices competed for the right to represent their region at the international Masonry Skills Challenge in Orlando next February. The two third-year apprentices are pictured above working on their projects. Winners of this competition were first year - David Lenz. Brothers Masonry; second year - Victor Chavez. Canyon State Masonry; and third year - Moroni Mejia, Rhino Masonry.
Dallas, Texas
On October 21, apprentices from Region F participated in the qualifying Masonry Skills Challenge in Dallas, Texas for the right to compete in the international Masonry Skills Challenge, which will be held in Orlando, Florida next February.
