How relationships between contractors and vendors increases the bottom line.

How did you get into the contracting business?

Williams & Sons Masonry was established in San Diego, California in the early 1960's by my father, Junior Williams. I was introduced to this business at a very young age. As children, we helped our father build our home. I started working with my father on weekends while I was in high school. Until 1980, the business concentrated on custom homes. After my father's death, my brother, Derrick Williams, and I joined forces to carry on this entity. Ultimately, we became more commercialized and are now one of the largest mason contractors in San Diego County.

I became a member of the MCAA because...

I felt it was to my own personal benefit to join this organization that gives me full backing in a variety of matters. It is the advantage of combining knowledge, experience and camaraderie in my field that I perceived to be necessary for my continued success. I became a member of the Mason Contractors Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties ten years ago. As a member of the local chapter and CCMCA (California Conference Masonry Contractors Association, the state association formed in the early 1960's by Ryan O'Brien) I automatically became a member of the MCAA. In the mid-90's, the California Conference Masonry Contractors Association joined the Mason Contractors Association of America. I am currently President of the local chapter and treasurer of CCMCA. The CCMCA national level works closely with the state organization. The benefits of being involved are numerous. In the past 10 years, our company has grown significantly and I believe it is due to being affiliated with these groups.

I find the thing I like most about the MCAA now is...

What I like most about the MCAA is attending the national conventions on an annual basis to keep updated on all the latest technologies the MCAA has to offer. This is a time when I interact with other mason contractors and learn of different techniques and strategies. I find the willingness of the other contractors to share their information with me to be a great asset and is beneficial to my operations. The camaraderie among the members makes me feel good about my participation in this organization. Our company has taken advantage of all the numerous seminars offered at the Masonry Showcase. All of these programs are invaluable to all mason contractors. We feel that if you are not a member of the MCAA, you are at an extreme disadvantage competing in this business field.
