Masonry is a two-year program offered for grades 10-12 at R.D. Anderson Applied Technology Center where Edward Mims is the instructor. This vocational school offers students the opportunity to learn a trade and gain extensive hands-on experience. Currently, there are 25 students enrolled in the 31-year-old RDA masonry program, including five apprentices. Last year's hands-on projects included a brick patio and lattice wall at the school for students to enjoy.
Church Hill, Tennessee
According to masonry instructor John Rutledge, the masonry program at Volunteer Comprehensive High School has an average enrollment of 15 students. The main project for the Building Trades Class is the construction of a house. They are currently working on their fifth house. All of the work done on the house is by student labor. The masonry skills are taught as needed beginning with the laying of the foundation block. All of the houses constructed have been at least half brick and the last two houses were total brick veneer. Laying time for the brick is one and one half school years since only the advanced masonry students work on the home for three hours per day. The average sale time for these home has been only two days. States Rutledge, "We are slow in construction but our quality is right with the market."
