# Colorado
The Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI) has been extremely busy this year.
First, the Colorado Construction Coalition, organized by the American Subcontractors Association and supported by numerous trade organizations, including RMMI, fought valiantly to pass legislation outlawing the unfair and damaging practice of risk transfer in construction contracts. Although the measure was killed by the Senate State Affairs Committee, the Coalition vows to continue their efforts to get this important legislation passed in the future.
RMMI teamed up with Jefferson County's Warren Tech Occupational Center to host the ninth annual Masonry Olympics for students of the school's Masonry Arts Program on April 24. Twenty junior and senior high school boys and girls demonstrated their bricklaying skills and competed for prizes and summer jobs in a timed competition.
The sold-out 2004 RMMI Golf & Dinner Classic was held at the Plum Creek Golf & Country Club on May 26th Tournament chairman Don Sackett of Acme Brick stocked the tournament with lots of special features, including a PGA pro golf clinic, $5,000 putting and $25,000 hole-in-one contests, as well as 18 individual hole contests that paid $100 each.
Coming up in the near future are the annual Summer Retreat for members and their families at Manor Vail Lodge in Vail, Colo, August 13-15, and the Masters of Masonry Design awards at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on October 7th. # Kentucky
David Mohney, Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Design, was present at the Kentuckiana Masonry Institute's (KMI) Annual Architectural Awards luncheon to award scholarships to finalists in the KMI/University of Kentucky College of Design Annual Masonry Design Competition & Scholarship Program. Students were asked to develop a masonry park bench. Winners were as follows: Phillip DeAngelis, first place, Paul Thamon and Michael Neurather, second place, and Maria Milkova, third place.

# Maryland
The International Masonry Institute, the City of Annapolis and the Maryland Historical Trust are teaming up in presenting the first in an annual series of Historic Masonry Restoration Conferences. The events will be headquartered at the Historic Inns of Annapolis on Aug. 26-28, 2004.
Recent statistics show that over half of all new construction contracts are for restoration or adaptive re-use, comprising roughly 17% of the masonry dollar.
This conference will focus on historic mortars, with a three-track education session including mortar analysis, mortar basics and a walking tour of historic Annapolis. Other sessions include the national sand library; a case study in restoration, lime putties and mortars; hands-on laboratory sessions in pointing, cleaning and more; panel discussions, and a final program on condition assessment.
