A1 Masonry Aspects of the World Trade Center Disaster

Audience: All

Following September 11, 2001, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and American Society of Civil Engineers deployed a team of engineers to study the disaster. This speaker was one of 18 assigned to the World Trade Center, assessing the tower collapses and the subsequent damage to surrounding buildings. Photographs and personal experiences of Ground Zero will be presented, as well as highlights of the performance of masonry in the disasters.

B11 Proper Techniques for Installing Thin Veneer Stone

Buechel Stone's NTV (Natural Thin Veneer) is a thin, lightweight natural stone alternative to full veneer stone. Because it is lightweight, NTV can be installed in half the time and does not require additional foundation support as with full stone veneer. Its thinner dimensions also make it ideal for projects with limited space. Session will focus on discussing the unique features of NTV products and demonstrate the proper techniques for installing NTV and a newly-introduced weep system for the product.

Occupants of homes and buildings have the right to feel secure, be it from natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes or from unfortunate unnatural events ranging from fire to terrorism. The performance of concrete masonry has been well documented related to high winds, seismic events, blast loads, and more. This presentation will address research documentation in these areas, case studies of documented performance, and design recommendations related to security with concrete masonry construction.

C3 Moisture Management in Steel Stud & Masonry Assemblies

When specifying wall systems, climate must be considered in order to control moisture and energy flow. Moisture works its way into wall systems in a variety of ways. It can diffuse through the components of the wall system in the form of vapor. Vapor can be carried into the wall cavity by air infiltration and air exfiltration. Water that leaks in through the roof or wall flashings will also enter the wall system. This seminar will look at these issues in more detail.
