PROJECT DIVERSITY AND CREATIVE DESIGN ARE HALLMARKS OF WASHINGTON STATE'S 2005 EXCELLENCE IN MASONRY DESIGN AWARDS

What do a historic mill transformed into art galleries and residential lofts, a Presbyterian church, a luxury Northwest inn, an amphitheater for the Tulalip Tribes, and a children's health center have in common? They are all winners of the 2005 Excellence in Masonry Design Awards, sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Washington (M/W).

The awards program, now in third decade, is a celebration of the best in Northwest masonry workmanship and building design, and reflects the successful relationships established among masons, architects and project owners.

"The awards honor the collaboration of the best mason contractors and craftsmen with the visionar-les, creatives and designers in the building industry," said Marc Holmes, MIW director.

"In addition to masons and architects, the Excellence in Masonry Design Awards also honor the commitment of project owners who value, envision and invest in buildings of enduring quality, enlightened design, and creative use of masonry materials. These owners recognize not only the durability of masonry products, but also the variety of material-types, textures, colors, and applications they offer to architects and the value it adds to a project."

A high percentage of past winners have gone on to take top honors in various national and international masonry competitions, bringing recognition and acclaim to the Northwest for its tradition of using a variety of masonry products to support and enhance both traditional and modern architectural design.

"These buildings are an important, long-term investment in our local communities, and represent the very best in Northwest regional design and con-struction," Holmes said. "It is a regional architectural heritage of which we can all be proud."

The MIW was founded in 1972 to promote the masonry industry, provide technical information and resources, and provide a liaison between the public and the mason contractors. For more information, please go to www.masonryinstitute.com.
