Positive Signs
As we hit the half-year mark in 2009, it seems only natural to look around and see what's different. Given our challenging economy, I tend to first ask, "What has improved?"
I have decided to dedicate this For The Record column as a request to our readers to learn what large or significant projects are launching in your area. Are new-construction projects beginning to improve your local economies, and your business? For instance, in Marietta, Ga., ground has been broken on a new, $63 million, six-story, 200,000-square-foot Cobb County Superior Court building. SPLOST will fund $55 million of the project, which will combine all of the county's court services on one campus and allow Juvenile Court to move to downtown Marietta, as well as provide a larger jury assembly room to house jurors.
Cobb County has entered into a design-build contract with Turner Construction to build a new courthouse. Turner is partnered with Pieper O'Brien Herr Architects, says Ken Alabiso, operations manager for Turner Construction. The size of the new courthouse has been expanded to include an additional floor for future growth, and building elevations have been updated to show the added floor. When completed in 2010, the courthouse will provide tighter security and be more energy efficient than the present court complex, county officials and the contractor say.
Through this column, I am calling for information on all projects going on in your state that are funded by stimulus money, federal money, or are simply high in cost and large in size. It's important to consider the projects that continue to move forward, as we each work through this grueling and tough financial climate.
