'IT MAKES A VILLAGE'

The Masonry Institute Inc. presented its third Masonry Expo/"It Makes a Village design-build competition at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, Va., April 28 and 29. The two-day event featured 18 AIA-accredited seminars for architects, a tour of the Lab at the National Concrete Masonry Association in Hendon, Va., and 38 masonry suppliers and manufacturers on the showroom floor with their expertise for the best practices and applications of masonry and its attributes of sustainability.

The design-build competition that took place over the two-day event featured four career and technology schools:
* Center of Applied Technology-North (CAT-N), Sevem, Md/Curtis Hoover, Instructor
* Carroll County Career and Technology Center, Westminster, Md/Mike Campanile, Instructor
* C.S. Monroe Leaming Center, Leesburg, Va/Paul Coates, Instructor
* Crossland High School, Temple Hills, Md/Demetrius Chew, Instructor

One school of architecture returned for a second year:
* Virginia Tech School of Architecture, Alexandria, Va/Henry Hollander, Professor

Five architect/mason contractor teams participated in the competition this year:
* Bignell, Watkins, Hasser Architects/L. F. Jennings, Inc.
* Davis, Carter, Scott, Ltd./Genco Masonry Inc.
* Beery Rio Architects/Falls Church Construction
* R. Hunter Hurt, Architect/J.D. Long Masonry Inc.
* John Cooney Associates Architects (JCA)/Senate Masonry Inc.

These teams showed that the diversity, creativity and steadfast sustainability of masonry are as true as they have been for centuries. The Masonry Institute fosters the workforce for tomorrow. Young people from the career and technology centers are the future of our industry as well as the students of architecture.

The Career and Technology schools had a separate category for judging and the first place winner received a Bosch Laserand Tripod - donated by Bosch Tools and sponsored by White Cap Construction Supply.

The People's Choice award was determined by the attendees who cast their votes for the projects they liked the best. This award was a sculpture carved by Sue Landerman at last year's event. CAT-N was awarded that honor as well. For more information and to view additional photos, visit: www.masonryinstitute.us.
