Air Barriers and Insulation

Air barriers and insulation play crucial roles in building performance, impacting energy efficiency, comfort, and durability.

`

An air barrier is a material or system designed to control air leakage into and out of a building enclosure. Uncontrolled air leakage can lead to significant energy losses, moisture problems, and reduced comfort. Air barriers work by creating a continuous, sealed layer that prevents air from passing through walls, roofs, and floors.

`

Insulation, on the other hand, is a material that resists heat flow. It helps to keep buildings warm in the winter and cool in the summer, reducing the need for heating and cooling systems. Insulation is typically measured by its R-value, which indicates its resistance to heat flow. Higher R-values provide better insulation.

`

The effectiveness of both air barriers and insulation depends on proper installation. Gaps, voids, or compressions in the insulation can significantly reduce its performance. Similarly, air barriers must be continuous and sealed to prevent air leakage. Combining effective air barriers and insulation is essential for creating energy-efficient and comfortable buildings.
