2001 University Professors' Masonry Workshop Scheduled

Words: Phillip SamblanetThe 2001 University Professors' Masonry Workshop (UPMW) has been scheduled for March 12-13th at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, and will be hosted by Dr. Russell Brown. An opening reception will start the workshop on the evening of Sunday, March 11th.

Now in its 13th, year the University Professors' Masonry Workshop is aimed at providing professors with the resources and background needed to effectively teach masonry design and construction classes at the university level. Workshop participants hear leading professors, practitioners and industry leaders discuss the newest ideas in masonry education and research. This year, participants will visit a state-of-the-art research facility that specializes in the testing of brick masonry. Construction sample panels will show common and not-so-common masonry details, and participants will have an opportunity to try bricklaying.

As in past years, the 2001 UPMW will feature separate tracks for architects and engineers, as well as combined sessions on masonry materials, construction, design, and solutions to common masonry problems. Those attending have the opportunity in the breakout sessions to share the newest ideas in architectural and engineering education, to learn what resources are available for masonry education, to discuss research opportunities, and to get answers from some of the industry's most knowledgeable experts.

Each attendee will receive a comprehensive library of masonry teaching aids and technical resources including TMS's new 3rd edition of Classnotes for a Course in Masonry Structures, BIA's Technical Notes on Brick Construction, IMI's The Planning and Design of Loadbearing Masonry Buildings, NCMA's Tek Notes for Concrete Masonry Design and Construction, and PCA's Concrete Masonry Handbook. In addition, a collection of sample curricula from universities around the country is given to each participant as well as numerous magazines and design guides.

Sponsors of the 2001 UPMW are the Brick Industry Association, the International Masonry Institute, the National Concrete Masonry Association, the Portland Cement Association and The Masonry Society. Sponsorship of most attendees is also often provided by local masonry groups, who pay for registration fees and typically a portion or all of the travel expenses. For additional information on the UPMW, contact The Masonry Society (TMS) at 303-939-9700. Registration information is also available on TMS's website at www.masonrysociety.org.
