Biggs Awarded Honorary Member Status by ASCE

Words: Phillip SamblanetLong-time The Masonry Society (TMS) member, David T. Biggs, PE, was recently elected an Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Biggs was recognized for his advancement of structural masonry engineering through innovative engineering design, restoration and code development, and the sharing of this knowledge through service and contributions to the public. This acknowledgement of Biggs' exceptional work and leadership is truly an honor as ASCE has elected only 530 individuals to Honorary Member status since 1853. ASCE will formally recognize him at its annual convention in Los Angeles in October.

Because of his expertise and service, Biggs has been honored in many ways over the years. He has been the recipient of the Daniel W. Mead Prize and the Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement from ASCE. He was the first to be selected Distinguished Graduate of the Department of Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Both the New York State Society of Professional Engineers and the New York Association of Consulting Engineers also selected Biggs as the 2003 "Engineer of the Year."

Biggs is an active member of TMS, has served on the Board and recently published "Review of Masonry Aspects of the World Trade Center Disaster" through TMS. He chairs the Prestressed Masonry subcommittee of the Masonry Standards Joint Committee and is an author on the "Masonry Designers Guide."
