By T. Walter Kirk
T.W.Kirk & Son
Glendale 22, Mo.

During the August Executive Board Meeting there was considerable interest and discussion on the various educational programs which could be undertaken by the MCAA. Mr. T. Walter Kirk presented the following material to the Executive Board.

Various methods are used by the Mason Contractor in determining the cost of masonry work from plans prepared by the architect.

All costs are based on the actual square feet of the various types of walls shown by the plan.

The specifications govern the types of materials used in the construction of these walls.

Notes should be made of the materials to be used, the kind of bond, parging of face brick, types of mortar, masonry reinforcement, special pattern work-tuekpointing and eleaning.

Make a study of the plans before starting the take off.

Draw an outline of the building on your estimate sheet showing the dimensions of the various walls. This outline can be referred to and be of assistance in determining labor costs. Sketch should be made of special pattern work.

The square feet arrived at from the take off is reduced to the actual number of brick-tile-blocks, etc, which will be used in the construction of the building.

If the take off is accurate the material costs are determined by the mate-
