Concrete Masonry Fallout Shelter

Fallout shelters used to be a little like the weather. Everyone expressed an opinion, but no one cared to do anything about them.

Now, in light of recent happenings, many families are prepared to take positive steps. In so doing, however, it's surprising what little they really know of the subject.

To begin with, a fallout shelter is just what the name implies. It is not a blast-proof refuge but rather a facility designed to afford adequate protection against radioactive fallout.

This naturally raises the question of what exactly is fallout?

Fallout is tiny pieces of dust and debris which are made radioactive by nuclear explosions. When an H-bomb explodes close to the ground, thousands of tons of these particles are sucked upward to form the familiar mushroom cloud.

Some of this radioactive material spills out of the cloud near the target area. Most of it, however, is carried by the wind and could eventually settle in any part of the country.

Fallout can seldom be felt. Often it can't even be seen. The point is, if exposed to much of it long enough, a person can become seriously ill even though they do not come in contact with the radioactive particles. It can also be deadly.

Consequently, the best way to survive this danger is to have a mass of protective material between you and the particles. A fallout shelter is the most effective insurance.

There are several varieties of fallout shelters. Some can be built outdoors either aboveground or underground. The most popular and least expensive shelter, however, is one which can be constructed in a corner of the basement. Built of concrete masonry, eight inches thick, it will furnish ample protection everywhere except in areas hit hardest by fallout. A typical home shelter areas (Continued on next page)
