Officer Installation

Caps Cook MCA Smoker
CHICAGO-Armand Asquini was installed as new president of the Mason Contractors Association of Cook County last month at MCACC's annual spring smoker.

Other officers installed with Asquini were Joseph Szabo, vice president; Ron McLaren, treasurer, and H. A. Christiansen, secretary.

Installed as directors were Harold Davia, Phil Forsgren, Frank Laureys, James Schade and Herbert Weistmann.

Retiring officers and directors were presented with plaques for MCA service. They were Pat Filippi, president; Michael Busa, R. W. Larsen and William Weyer, directors.

Ivar Ullman received a special "long service" award for his years of MCA service. He is retiring from the industry.


New Committee Chairman
ROCK ISLAND, ILL. New committee chairman appointed to serve the Quad-City Association of Mason Contractors are: Walter Marolf, Apprenticeship and Contract and Arbitration; Robert Martin, Promotional Goal; Frank Woods, Grievance; and Peter Paulsen, Membership.


17-Year-Old Californian Named First

Winner of Harry C. Bates Scholarship
LOS ANGELES-James W. Oates, 17-year-old California high school student and son of a mason contractor, has been awarded the first Harry C Bates Merit Scholarship.

The $1,500 scholarship, named for BM&PIU Union President Emeritus Harry C. Bates, is part of an educational aid program for deserving children of members of the BM&PIU, and will be presented annually. The senior Oates is a member of BM&PIU Local No. 2 in Los Angeles.

The scholarship is included in the International's educational aid program to enable the children of a union bricklayer to attain a higher education. There are no restrictions as to the course scholarship recipients may pursue, according to BM&PIU President John J. Murphy, who announced the award.

Other aspects of the program include direct grants to the college or university chosen by the winner of the scholarship.

Judging of applicants is made by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Phoenix Named Presiden

Of Toronto Chapter MCA
TORONTO Ben Phoenix has been elected to head the Masonry Contractors Association, Inc., here. Named to serve with him are: Leonard Ecker, vice president; A. DiRocco, secretary; and A L. Watson, treasurer.

Directors of the local group are A. DeLuca, O. Soligo, Zachary Vuono, M. Zanini, A. Pezzetta, Elias Redzej, G. Sfreddo, Richard Martin, P. Puppi, B. Bottos, O. Perin, Spasieri and W. Porteous.
