OLD 2nd ANNUAL MASONRY CONFERENCE

Bricklayers and mason contractors of Utah took their first big step toward masonry industry unity March 24 at the Second Annual Masonry conference in Salt Lake City.

"By the looks of the turnout here tonight, the Utah masonry industry has opened the door to a new era of growth and prosperity," Stanley N. Child, general conference chairman, declared to an overflow crowd at the Saturday night banquet in the Hotel Motor Lodge auditorium.

As Mr. Child spoke, it was obvious the theme of the conference, "Stronger Bonds in 1962," was already beginning to take effect among the workers and bosses of one of Utah's largest and oldest construction trades. More than 600 bricklayers, mason contractors, masonry products manufacturers and their wives attended the banquet and sessions of the one-day conference, sponsored jointly by the re-organized Utah Masonry Advisory Board.

For years leaders in the Utah masonry industry have been trying to pull together various segments of the trade to promote construction, improve communications, quality workmanship and inter-industry fellowship.

This conference appeared to "put it into orbit" on all of these things, Child said after the banquet.

The Utah Masonry Advisory Board is jointly financed, sponsored and administered by representatives from both labor and management, who worked in close harmony in putting on this conference.

One of the most important actions of conference delegates was adoption of a resolution which sets up a statewide advertising and promotion program for masonry in the state of Utah. This program includes advertising, public relations, direct mail campaigns, and publication of informative folders and brochures. It also calls for continuation of publication of the industry's new "Plumbob," a monthly newsletter deemed "The voice of the Utah masonry industry." Two issues were published before the conference.

Richard J. Marshall, a representative from David W. Evans & Associates, a Salt Lake City advertising firm, outlined the campaign.

Another highlight of the conference was a panel discussion on "What's Right and Wrong in Utah Masonry What Lies Ahead?" Five Utah architects, a mason contractor, and a labor leader answered the questions.

George A. Miller, Executive Vice President, Mason Contractors Association of America spoke at the afternoon session.
