Hold Masonry Conference

fired at them from the audience. Among some of the points made by panelists were:
* Bricklayers and mason contractors need to improve communications between themselves and architects.
* There are many unqualified contractors putting up inferior masonry projects that oftimes give masonry a bad name. These men should be encouraged to improve workmanship and join the Mason Contractors Association of America.
* Most architects are "sold" on masonry materials and will sell them to their clients, but those in the masonry industry who understand their products better than anybody should be willing to develop new ideas and show architects, builders, etc., just what can be done with modern masonry materials.
* Bricklayers are willing to do an honest day's work for an honest day's pay, but contractors, architects, ete., should not expect quality work unless reasonable time is given to do the job.
In other conference action, conference delegates heard from two national figures in the masonry industry, one from management and one from labor. Representing labor was Thomas F. Murphy, secretary of the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union of Washington, D. C.
Mr. Murphy, commending the group on its "community spirit," called for a lot more "good old brotherhood" in the unions to overcome bad publicity in the labor movement and make life more pleasant for the bricklayer and the contractor alike.
"Our hands are the only objects we have for making a living," he said. "We should promote ourselves and our products. We should organize ourselves better. We've got to in order

to overcome the competition."
Another conference speaker, on the management side, was George Miller, executive vice president of the Mason Contractors Association of America, who flew from Chicago to attend the meeting.
"It's refreshing to see management and labor side by side at the conference table planning the future of their industry," Mr. Miller said.
He added that the bricklayers and mason contractors of Utah, in forming a new advisory board, had organized one of the few progressive mason associations in America. "As far as I know, it's the only one on a state-wide basis in the entire country," he announced.
In the conference morning session, Douglas Thompson, professor of economics at the University of Utah, told the group that there was little chance of a depression in the U. S. in the next couple of decades.
"Even a general outbreak of war with a corresponding reduction in arms expenditures would not bring on a depression," he said, citing that government controls and intervention in banking, etc., would prevent this kind of disastrous economic slump.
