The school board was so interested it had the air conditioned school built. The sponsor of the original study was the Carrier Corporation, leading air conditioning manufacturer. The comparative cost of air conditioning a square foot of wall over the building life is 41 cents for a masonry cavity wall; 91 cents for a metal-wall; and a staggering $28.23 for a glass wall. These figures are given by a team of professional engineers.
Metal Industry Claim
This is a fine teaching tool because it brings the outside indoors.
Facts
If teachers want to hold an outdoor class, they go outside. If they want concentration on what's happening inside, cars and people are only an irritating distraction. The fact is that the masonry wall has a real educational advantage. The fewer windows, the more flexibility inside to put up tackboards, chalkboards, maps, projection screens, folding stages, etc. This is education; not mooning out windows.
Metal Industry Claim
Metal walls are cheaper to maintain.
Facts
This is plain lying and should be a warning to every person in the masonry industry that the opposition will stop at nothing, however false or outrageous, to sell its products to the gullible public. The ultimate cost of a masonry cavity wall, that is, the cost per square foot over the building life, is figured at $4.13. This includes building cost plus maintenance and replacement over 50 years. The comparable figure for an aluminum window wall is $20.48 or five times more than the masonry wall.
The masonry industry has the products, the contractors, and the craftsmen to build solid, safe, permanent, beautiful, and highly-flexible schools. We are blamed (or credited, depending on how you look at it) for creating a big trend toward windowless masonry schools. It's a nice compliment to our powers of persuasion. But isn't it a much better compliment to what we produce? Architects, school boards, and businessmen aren't all fools! They recognize quality. Today, we need a better education for our children. We also need to save every possible tax dollar. You wouldn't find two better arguments for the modern, flexible masonry school. Use them. And save your job, as you save your community money.
The Metal Industry Claim
Young people are happier in an "open world glass and metal school.
The Facts
There isn't a shred of evidence to support this idea. They aren't surrounded by glass at home. Are they unhappy there? And, who says that you can't see outdoors at all in a masonry school? Strip windows show the sky and overhead skylights give changing qualities to natural light.
The Metal Industry Claim
Glass schools offer better and cheaper lighting.
The Facts
Untrue. In one-story schools, skylights are easily installed and afford effective neutral light. Light from walls often means glare and discomfort. In addition, the lights in any school or office building always burn during the daytime. Additional illumination in the windowless school may not be needed: if it is, the cost will be more than offset by the high maintenance cost of large window areas.
