front elevation with fireplace wall and chimney
The fireplace wall and chimney form an intriguing focal point for this unusual house. The sculptured chimneys of Williamsburg offer inspiration for the design. The flue becomes a specific feature of the structure. Note that the house, though rugged in its use of a massive fireplace, brick walls with exposed interiors, and a strongly-defined retaining wall, is still light and airy. The pitched ceiling is exposed and clerestory windows admit generous light.
entrance walk and wall
The broad brick walk with its defined borders graciously draws the visitor to the wide double-entry doors. The screen wall to the right gives privacy to the living area and provides additional direction to the entrance through the perspective of its deep-struck horizontal joints. Thus may brick be used to create a touch of luxury and hospitable invitation at the traditional point of entry.
