Doing the job that is required, in both the establishment and maintenance of a health and welfare plan, takes time and effort.
In fact, the task probably looks almost overwhelming to new trustees who are selected for their willingness to do a service and not for a detailed knowledge of benefit planning, and who have responsibilities to full-time occupations. Trustees can and do look to others for help in doing their job.
Getting Help
This help comes from a number of sources. Trustees may wish to participate in organizations that provide an opportunity for discussing mutual problems with trustees of other plans, and others concerned with the successful operation of such plans. One such organization is the National Conference of Health, Welfare and Pension Plans. Studies and reports of such bodies as the Department of Labor will provide useful information. Legal counsel and auditor also will provide much help in their areas of specialization.
In areas outside the competence of the attorney or auditor, trustees seek help from a number of sources:
* Insurance company representatives
* Insurance agent or broker
* Consultant who accepts insurance commissions
* Independent consultant
