Hold Masonry Jamboree
The Connecticut masonry industry took an important step forward in May by staging a Masonry Construction Jamboree, first of its kind in this country. The event was even more successful than its most optimistic had predicted, bringing 2,000 guests to the plant.

One section of the thirty-five exhibits and "live" demonstrations at the Connecticut Masonry Construction Jamboree held in May. From left to right, at rear of show space are specially constructed demonstrations of block, utility, cavity and reinforced masonry which received close attention from architects and masonry contractors.

Kelsey-Ferguson Brick Co., in East Windsor Hill, it was held. Architects, consulting engineers, home owners, masonry contractors from every corner of the state and Union officials from New England and Washington D. C., were in the throng that crowded around the masonry and building equipment demonstration, and inspected exhibits.

Many of the visitors saw, for the first time, the construction of utility, cavity and reinforced masonry. Eye-catching demonstrations were furnished by the new type lift trucks, some of them capable of 75-foot load hoists. Safe, quickly-assembled modern scaffolding particularly impressed architects and engineers, evidently having in mind the growing use of masonry in high buildings. In all, 35 exhibits and "live" demonstrations occupied the attention of those in attendance during the six-hour program. Another "first" for a majority of visitors was a series of plant tours of the Kelsey-Ferguson manufacturing areas, where they saw brick production by the latest modern methods and equipment.

The basic aim of the first concerted effort by a segment of the entire state masonry industry was to show its capabilities of meeting and solving modern building trend problems, using modern materials and equipment, and achieving resultant competitive costs thereby. Contractors and co-operating participants were unanimous in agreeing that such an aim had been achieved.

Co-operation by all meaning hard work, financial investment, and coordination of efforts was the key to our success with this masonry trail-blazing venture, said William H. Bliss, chairman of the Committee of 100 which guided the affair from its inception to the successful conclusion. Mr. Bliss is also executive director of the Connecticut Brick Service & Development Association. "Brick and block manufacturers, Masons Contractors Associations of the principal building areas of the state and the BM & P International Union gave whole-hearted active support. The event was a strikingly successful demonstration of the results of an industry's segments working together," he emphasized.
