New York Structure Uses Masonry
Toast colored brick combined with a purple hued brick base and trim will be used for the exterior material of the new addition to the Friend's Seminary at 16th Street and Rutherford Place, New York City.
The selection of an exterior material for the new building which would form a subtle contrast to the old brick of the centurial main school presented a problem to architects, Chapman, Evans & Delehanty who solved it by specifying "weathered" or iron spot brick.
Iron spot brick is made by burning the brick in coal fired kilns, according to Joseph Holme, president of the Metropolitan Brick Masonry Council, resulting in a distinctive brick of variegated texture and with a surface spotted with smooth iron spots.
Space was at a premium for the Seminary addition, and as a result the 4800 square foot gymnasium will be 22 feet below grade level and the basement roof utilized for a playground. Furthermore, a classroom wing is being built directly over the gym which will be fully ventilated including air intake and exhaust. It was necessary to perform an extremely complex underpinning operation so the adjacent buildings originally constructed in 1860 would not cave in. To accomplish this, a new wall was built under the old foundations in alternate strips. Four foot sections were excavated down to rock, one at a time, then the wall poured and the process repeated until the entire foundation was reinforced. To obtain a clear space, the new school will utilize one story high modified vierendeel trusses spanning the entire width of the building. The first floor will actually hang from modified vierendeel trusses.
