Annual Trade Season Opener
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. The Annual "Trade Season Opener" sponsored by the Concrete & Masonry Contractors Association of Minneapolis was held at the Thunderbird Motel with approximately 300 people in attendance. The Program Committee of Dick Einck, Lee Lemeiux and Keith Anderson are to be congratulated on making this annual Spring Kickoff Banquet a huge success.
Over 100 leaders representing all facets of the masonry industry attended the Bricklayer Apprentice Seminar at Cranston, R.I. sponsored by the New England Masonry Institute on May 18th. Those in attendance included officials of the union, brick dealers and manufacturers, block producers, mason contractors and national officers of trade associations in the contracting and masonry field.
The purpose of NEMI's Seminar was to reveal the plans for a $1,035,000 program to train new bricklayer apprentices over the next 18 months. The program is financed under the Manpower Development and Training Act and will be directed by William F. Roark of the Structural Clay Products Institute, Washington, D.C.
In describing the program, Mr. Roark said, "This is a voluntary program which will be put into effect in those areas where needed."
Tom Murphy, Secretary of the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasters International Union praised the expanded effort to train apprentices. "The New England Masonry Institute and other similiar fine groups are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to pro-(Continued on page 21)
Blackstock Article
Subject of an excellent article in the Seattle Times is MCAA Member G. Earl Blackstock. Entitled "Dean of Bricklayers Eyes Moon", the article relates Mr. Blackstock's experiences and presents his views on the Industry. Typical quote from the story is "There were never any school dropouts in my family. Either they went to school, or they went to work," or "Brick follows style trends just like women's clothes". The story ends with "He is an artisan of the old school, a perfectionist with one eye alert for the next job and the other eye on the moon."
