Pittsburgh Apartments Use Masonry
A senior citizens apartment building in Monessen is a reflection of several current phenomena: 1) a renaissance in masonry construction through the use of giant-sized, high-fired, load-bearing, through-wall brick units; 2) the current emphasis on the building and operation, through governmental authorities, of modern apartment structures for people of retirement age and low incomes; and 3) the genius of contemporary architects in the application of materials and in the design of structures so that the facilities are at once attractive, economical, functional, easy to maintain, and with provisions for both privacy and "togetherness."
One of the very attractive structures in Monessen is Valley Manor, a recently built apartment building on Third Street, just a short distance from the heart of the community. Valley Manor and its 72 apartment units are operated by The Housing Authority of Westmoreland County and the facilities are occupied primarily by people of retirement age.
From one end view of the building, in the background are the two main business streets, beyond which is the new basic oxygen steelmaking plant of a regional steel firm. In the words of Charles G. Cavaliere, executive director of The Housing Authority of Westmoreland County, "it's quite a thing to see a building of this modern construction and styling in a 'mill town,' close to an actual steel plant, where the residents can be close to the people and things which they have long known. And it is certainly a rare thing for people of retirement age and low incomes to have such a facility close at hand."
As seen from above, the structure is a rectangle with four curved wings reaching out from the rectangle on each side. Three-fourths of the building has five living levels, with four levels at one end, and the ground floor contains utility, lobby, office and recreational areas.
The perimeter walls of all living levels are constructed of Harbison-Giant brick in a rust red shade. The brick forms both the finished exterior and interior surfaces of the perimeter walls, except for the accent panels on the front of the curved wings.
