Vermiculite Ratings

The new "Vermiculite Fire-Resistance Ratings" handbook issued by the Vermiculite Institute presents the latest awards by Underwriter's Laboratories, Inc. of Chicago for various types of vermiculite retardants.

The manual has been streamlined to feature the most economical designs based on thickness; for example, a half-inch of Type-MK vermiculite sprayed directly to a structural member, which was rated at four hours by Underwriters'.

Also of interest is a two-hour rating earned by vermiculite concrete roof insulation over pre-stressed concrete units.

In all, nine new designs have been added. Some involve columns; others, composite steel roof decks and floors.

For convenient cross-reference, the design number of Underwriters' Laboratories is shown for each rating. Most of the construction drawings are new and simplified. The loose-leaf format will facilitate keeping the contents current.

Available from the Institute's member companies. Building officials, fire insurance rating bureaus, and government agencies can obtain copies from Vermiculite Institute, 208 South LaSalle St., Chicago 4, Ill. AIA File 21-C-1.
