Research Report
A new technical bulletin, No. 67-5 titled "Investigation of Continuous Metal Ties as a Replacement for Brick Ties in Masonry Walls" has been issued by Dur-0-wal, manufacturers of masonry wall reinforce-ment and allied masonry products.

The 11 page bulletin is based on tests conducted at IIT Research Institute by S. A. Bortz, Structural Engineer. Properties of walls bonded with continuous metal ties include compressive and flexural strength plus water permeability test results. These studies are reviewed both in discussion and chart form. Like information is included for brick header tied walls.

Giant Floor Pavers
Harbison GIANT floor pavers conform to ASTM-60 specifications for Type H industrial floor materials. The strength maintenance-saving durability of the pavers are prompting wide use in industrial construction. At the same time their attractiveness and skid-resistant surfaces are winning applications in building entrances, corridors and walkways, and for landscaping patios and terraces.

The new screen tile is available in three basic designs. Two of these have nominal face dimensions 8 inches square and are thus modular with the GIANT 16 by 4 inch wall brick. Like the other Harbison-Walker structural products, the screen tile is press molded from select fireclays and high fired to insure strength, freedom from residual shrinkage, low porosity, and high resistance to weathering, fading, and spalling.

Harbison Giant pavers, the masonry screen tile, and Harbison Giant brick all are available in a variety of attractive earthen colors. For copies of the literature, please communicate with the company at 2 Gateway Center, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222.

Feeder Conveyors
Olson Construction Co., Sacramento, found a train of Morgen feeder conveyors the ideal way to place 15.000 yards of concrete for a 130 x 150 foundation of the new State Office Building at Sacramento, California.

Two-thirds of the slab was seven feet thick. The job was completed in nine pours ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 yards each.

To double the volume of concrete that 9 and 10-yard truck mixer could discharge at one time, Olsen arranged one Morgan Harbison-Walker Refractories Company has published folders on its Giant floor pavers and its new designs of masonry screen tile. These products are complementary to Harbison Giant wall brick and the folders are intended as supplements or inserts for the previously distributed brochure on GIANT brick.

conveyors in two trains of six conveyors each. The feeder conveyors reached out the length of the pour and then telescoped back on double tracks as the work progressed. There was no need to interrupt the pour to remove conveyors.

The conveyors placed 2" slump concrete with up to 3" aggregate as fast as truck mixers bring it. Olson says he knows of no faster or lower cost method to carry a volume of concrete out over a pour than by a train of feeder conveyors.
