Mobile Concrete Mixer
Increased capacity and proper load distribution on a revolutionary mobile concrete mixer introduced by Rite-way, Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind., is achieved with an air-suspended non-powered fourth axle.
Air suspensions developed by Neway Equipment Company, Muskegon, Mich., allow part of the load to be shifted between the front driving axle and the tandem rear driving axle of the unique front-discharge vehicle.
In states where front axle load is closely controlled, the correct load distribution is obtained by adjusting the amount of air applied to the air suspension system. Once the proper air pressure setting is determined by driving the front wheels of the fully-loaded truck onto a scale and adjusting the air pressure to give the correct front-end load, the same pressure setting then can be used whenever carrying a full load to make sure the truck is not overloaded. If a lighter load is carried, less air can be applied.
When more air is applied to the air springs, the non-powered axle carries a bigger share of the load, actually lifting the front end of the truck so that the front axle carries less load. Conversely, reducing the air pressure increases the load on the front axle.
By making it possible to shift part of the load between the front and rear axles, the air suspensions also contribute to the truck's unusual ability to operate effectively in both mud and sand.
The non-powered axle can be lifted off the ground or highway for greater traction with a Neway axle lift accessory of the model ART air suspension system, pointed out Robert W. Fay, Rite-Way vice president.
Tires on the extra axle can be used for spares in an emergency, he added, noting that the truck's eight flotation tires are interchangeable.
The unusual design of the Rite-Way mobile mixer allows the driver to discharge an entire 11-yard load of concrete without leaving the cab. The front-end discharge chute is elevated and rotated hydraulically from within the cab. By rotating the chute simultaneously while moving forward or backward, the driver can pour a slab or driveway so evenly that little strike-off labor is needed, firms using the truck report.
The 6 by 8 truck is powered by a diesel engine with an Allison MT-41 automatic transmission. Its 11 yard mixer is made of special heat-treated steel, as are the frame rails for the chassis. With a full load of concrete, the vehicle weighs about 70,000 pounds.

Headband
A new headband which "works like a portable air conditioner" has been developed by the Koolon Company, Baltimore, Maryland, and the rave notices it has received from test groups may indicate the arrival of the most significant personal cooling device ever offered at a low price.
The band is composed of an exterior mesh with absorbent interior and a featherlight aluminum reverse side. The interior is wet with water applied through the mesh. Air circulation causes evaporation and a cooling effect takes place. The aluminum band, which is against the wearer's head, becomes chilled and keeps the wearer's entire body comfortable. The cooling effect lasts for several hours and only re-wetting is required to begin the sequence again.
It has been found that most high temperature discomfort comes, not from the heat, itself, but from perspiration. By correcting excessive blood vessel dilation in the skin the Koolon band keeps the whole body cooler and thereby cuts perspiration to a minimum. In one two-hour test period conducted under conditions termed, "oppressive", employees showed no perspiration on arms or face even though thermometers read 90 degrees and humidity stood at 60%.
One well known booster of the Koolon product is Baltimore Oriole All-Star third baseman Brooks Robinson, who wore the band in his hat during last year's World Series. "It gets plenty hot on the playing field," says Brooks, "but with the Koolon band I felt cool and comfortable." In addition to the industrial application, the bands are also being embodied in a wide range of sport, spectator and casual hats for the warm weather months.
The key to increased productivity, diminished absenteeism, and significantly improved morale. Inquiries should be directed to The Koolon Company, Inc., 10 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21201.
