In Other Words...
By Walter T. Derk
MCAA Insurance Consultant
Much has been written about insurance but many times the specific question which you would like answered is not covered. Readers are invited to submit questions on any insurance matter. While all may not be answered via this column, every question submitted will be studied and answered by Mr. Derk personally.
Question:
Ours is a family-held corporation and I'm wondering whether it is advantageous to insure my own automobile under the corporate or individual name.
Answer:
A dollar and cents answer would require knowing whether you have any young drivers in the family and the kind of accident-violation record you all have. Speaking purely from the insurance angle, however, it is usually to your benefit to take title and insure it under the corporate name. Any tax ramifications must be separately considered by someone expert in that field. If you choose the corporate route, however, don't overlook the need for Use of Other Automobiles Coverage for (1) you and your spouse and (2) each other family member of driving age. This is a subtle point often missed.
Question:
Have you ever really seen a big deal safety campaign prove to be worth the trouble and expense involved?
Answer:
How does a 109% premium savings in one year sound to you? Yes, I've seen it pay off countless times and can recite specific cases the next time we meet at an association function. I once wondered, too. No more. It works all right.
Question:
I normally do work in Michigan but on occasion take on an Ohio job, having a few laborers there. Do I really have to buy two Compensation policies?
Answer:
Yes. Ohio law requires a separate policy issued by the State Fund.
