World's Tallest Bank Building

(Continued from page 13)
of the historic 46-story Morrison Hotel, the Hamilton Hotel and the Hartford Building. The work began in December, 1964. In less than a year, the first major phases of the redevelopment plan became a reality. The world's tallest demolition project, the Morrison Hotel, hit street level on December 15, 1965.

Even before the Morrison reached this point, workmen, nearly 50 feet below street level, began digging a series of caissons down to bedrock to support the new building. Work on most of the caissons was completed by September 15, 1966. The first structural steel was put in place on April 15, 1966. On July 13, 1967, the cornerstone of the First's tower was laid.

The building was topped out in June, 1968, less than four years after the project was conceived.

Plans to erect a companion 30-story building, which is to connect under Clark Street with the new headquarters, were announced in August of last year. The 30-story structure, scheduled for completion in 1970, will be located on the west side of Clark Street.

Razing of the First's old headquarters is scheduled to begin this fall. It will be replaced by a multi-level landscaped plaza containing a retail banking center, specialty shops, a restaurant, sculptured statuary and a fountain. The striking new complex will occupy the half-block area south of the new headquarters. Construction is slated to begin in 1970.
