Detroit Masonry Seminar
Mr. C. A. "Tom" Sirrine, Executive Secretary of the Concrete Products Association of Michigan presented an extremely informative program, entitled "Engineered Concrete Masonry," to 65 members of the Detroit Mason Contractors Association. The film, "Katamaran Hotel" produced by Hazzard Industries of San Diego, California describing load bearing concrete masonry design principles, was well received. A question and answer session attested to the fine reception of the program.
J. Moller, Director of Interior Design and Furnishings Program, Office of Foreign Buildings. Department of State, Washington, D.C.; the Honorable Bernard Tomson, Judge of the Nassau County (N.Y.) District Court, and Allan S. Boyd, former Secretary of Transportation, whose election was announced December 31, 1968.
Patent For Stack Work
Bethlehem Steel Corporation was granted U. S. Patent No. 3,458,012 for guidance apparatus for supporting a camera in close proximity to the inner wall of a tapered stack. The patent has been issued to Orlin Donaldson of the photographic services section of the advertising division in Bethlehem's industrial and public relations department.
The guidance apparatus, to which a camera is attached, is lowered into and raised from the interior of a tapered stack by means of a cable. By maintaining the camera at a fixed distance in close proximity to the inner surface of the stack, the apparatus makes it possible to take satisfactory photographs of the interior wall of the stack. A simple and inexpensive way of determining the physical condition of a stack interior is thus provided.
Chapter President Bob Vandervennet, right, and Director Frank Soave, left, discuss with Sirrine some of the design considerations regarding load bearing masonry construction.
