The Manual provides detailed information on various aspects of doing business. For instance, in eight states, bad check passers can look forward to up to ten years in prison, according to the Manual. In Arkansas and Utah, this sentence can be supplemented by a $10,000 fine, and in Georgia, one who writes a bad check can expect one year of labor on "public works." Those creditors who exceed the legal or contract rate of interest will void their contracts in New York and Arkansas. In several states, conviction for assessing usurious rates can mean that the creditor forfeits interest and/or principal, but in California the lender must pay three times the amount of usurious money. A lender in North Dakota or Vermont must forfeit all the interest and 25% or 50%, respectively, of the principal.
