Precast Panel Erection

And Its Hazards

What are the necessary procedures to take when planning, scheduling and actually installing pre-cast concrete panels? Here is a carefully outlined, step-by-step discussion of this important and expanding aspect of concrete masonry construction. The material is adapted from a talk before the National Safety Congress in Chicago last October given by MCAA member Dee Brown, President of Dee Brown Masonry, Inc., Dallas, Texas.

PHASE I: Subcontract activity and assignment of responsibility.

The contract administrator should take the following actions immediately after he is assigned a particular precast concrete erection project. They are as follows:

Obtain from the estimating department the methods and procedures that it had planned on using to set precast when the job was bid.

Issue purchase orders to the precast concrete panel supplier and/or manufacturer and instruct them to start shop drawings immediately.

When issuing the above subject purchase order, enumerate all items which need to be covered by shop drawings and completely review the contract plans and specifications with the material supplier and/or manufacturer.

Review all critical and potentially dangerous areas surrounding the precast panel anchorage design.

Completely review all critical facets pertaining to the weight of panels in relation to their structure so as to ascertain the proper number and placement of insert lifting devices which are to be cast into the panel so that panels can be lifted, turned, and transferred safely.

PHASE II: Prejob planning, scheduling and rigging.

Determine the criterion of rigging and equipment that will be required to set the precast concrete panels in regard to the size and weight of the precast concrete structure to be lifted.

Determine whether any special rigging is needed and, if so, plan for it accordingly.

Completely review with the manufacturer all facets surrounding the placement and type of anchorage which are to be used in the construction of the precast concrete panels.

Completely review with the manufacturer, according to the contract plans, the placement of and the types of receiving angles or anchors, which will be an integral part of the building, embedded in the concrete that will receive the anchoring devices cast into the precast concrete panels.

Try to project any and all logistic problems which may occur, such as the proper sequence scheduling of the panels, loaded in a manner in which the last panel loaded on the truck will be the first panel off so as to eliminate the danger of panels dominoing and causing extensive damage both to life, limb and property as well as other logistical problems pertaining to ingress, egress, and so forth.

Make arrangements to rent or lease the proper equipment necessary to accomplish the particular projects that you have contracted for from a reputable equipment firm, if (Continued on page 36)
