Claims Revolutionary Masonry Change

What is claimed to be the "first major improvement in masonry construction since 4000 B.C." has been announced by Arketex Ceramic Corp., Brazil, Ind. Called the Paramid Building System, it makes use of a specially prepared clay mixture designed to provide increased strength and close size tolerances necessary for the total utilization of high-strength epoxy type adhesive mortars.

The Paramid method can be used both for exterior and interior wall systems. The first phase is based on a 6" through-the-wall unit with faces of earth-tone range on both sides of the unit. It is designed to course out vertically at 16" for each five units. According to Arketex, its test show that to develop sufficient strength it is necessary to apply the adhesive mortar only to the bed joints.

A complete load-bearing masonry system thus can be assembled at the wall, fabricated into panels at the jobsite, and erected into position; or it can be factory assembled and transported to the jobsite. Additional flexibility is being designed for the Paramid system by the addition of other units, the company said.

Training Starts for Minority Groups

Training for journeyman status in the construction trades will be open to 50 minority group workers, mostly in their 30's and 40's, in the Niagara Falls (N.Y.) area, the U.S. Department of Labor has announced.

The Department has agreed to an 18-month contract with a nonprofit corporation called Training for Construction, Inc., which will conduct this project. It is being supported with $92,400 in Federal funds. The project is a joint effort of minority groups, employers, and construction unions in the Niagara Falls area. It is designed to locate, motivate, guide, and help minority group workers to qualify for journeymen status.

Trainees will be selected from minority applicants who have backgrounds or aptitudes in mechanical skills, the physical ability to perform the work, and strong motivation to enter the construction field-but are over the normal apprenticeable age.

Tradesmen specialists will be employed to recruit the minority applicants. In addition to on-the-job training provided by the employer, the trainees will receive related instruction off the job, which will be conducted by skilled construction craftsmen.

Called "World of Construction," the fully-accredited course eventually will offer a five-year training program in bricklaying, carpentry, cement finishing, and similar trades. Following graduation from high school, those who do not enter college hopefully will be qualified for a regular apprenticeship program at an advanced level.
