Ramada Inn
poolside environment. Sloped walls supporting the glass roof defined the restaurant entry, yet blended with the character of the motel entry. Interior partition walls used 70,000 expanded shale concrete block units. A check with the mason contractor showed that 9,500 bricklayer hours were required over the nine-month construction period to complete this Ramada Inn, one of the first locally designed and erected projects to feature the load-bearing masonry wall concept.

An air-conditioning system that adjusts to body temperatures on a room-by-room basis. Parking is below as well as above ground. An exterior zig-zag wall design eliminated the need for costly steel in the core of the building. All of the masonry work is reinforced. The basement and "attic" are fully utilized, and a false front atop the building conceals mechanical equipment, so often an eyesore on the roofs of many tall buildings.

The five-story structure was built in memory of Robert and Frank Stranahan, pioneers in Toledo's spark plug industry. Dry-press giant units were selected by the architects for the smooth texture and dimension stability of the brick. The brick "fin" walls, corbelled out above the first floor, serve to support the floor slab and balcony.
