Rubber Gloves Save Masonry Worker

Rubber gloves have been credited with saving the life of a worker with the mason contracting firm of William Rainey & Sons Construction Co. in San Francisco.

The employee was hauling a 20-ft.-long steel bar to the roof of an old warehouse under reconstruction when he snapped a 12,000-volt electrical wire from its pole. He was saved from almost sure death by the rubber gloves he wore.

IT WAS A HAPPY DAY recently when Michigan mason contractor Donald R. Bidwell, (L-R) who is chairman of the International Masonry Institute, presented BM&PIU President Thomas F. Murphy, an IMI Advisor, with a check for $65,000. Seen with them is Neal English, Executive Director of IMI. The happy exchange occurred at the recent meeting of IMI Trustees and Advisors in Williamsburg. Va. The check represents repayment in full of a $65,000 loan made by the BM&PIU to help establish the International Masonry Institute as a promotion trust to promote increased work opportunities in the industry. The repayment within 18 months of its founding, and IMI's current, comprehensive advertising campaign and other projects, reflect the rapid growth and success of the organization. IMI was founded by the MCAA and BM&PIU and is financed through collective bargaining agreements calling for le per hour contributions for each hour worked by BM&PIU members in the U.S. and Canada.

STANDARD FOR LOAD INDICATING DEVICES ON CRANES AND DERRICKS REVOKED BY OSHA

Provisions of the construction safety standards requiring the use of boom angle-indicators, load indicators, weight-moment devices, and similar equipment were revoked by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on July 14. The revocation will appear in a future Reference File supplement.

The specific action taken was to 1) revoke section 1926.550(a) (3); 2) not adopt a proposed standard to amend the regulation, and 3) defer further action pending development of greater experience in the use of such devices in the construction industry. The standard revoked required that a boom angle-indicator and load-indicating device in good working order be provided.

A proposal to amend the standard was made September 28, 1971, comments were submitted, and a public hearing was held. The comments and the record of the hearing were turned over to the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health which, after two considerations, recommended the revocation because the necessity and feasibility of such a standard has not been proven. The revocation took effect on July 14.

Mrs. A: "Does your husband live up to the promises he made when you were going together?" Mrs. B: "Oh, yes. In those days he said he wasn't good enough for me, and he's lived up to his word."
