Artistry in Brick for N.Y. Subway

Finished wall of glazed brick at subway entrance makes it virtually maintenance-free and graffiti-proof.

Mason contractor George Shinick is turning a New York City subway entrance at 60th Street and Third Avenue into a practical and economical, yet artistic way to improve what up to now have often been bleak entries to NYC subway stations. BM&PIU journeyman bricklayer Jack Alioto, NYC Local #1, is seen above at work on the Shinick project.

The brick he's using is glazed burnt orange with dark brown mortar. Brick is the major element for mezzanine walls as well as for the walls along the multi-story escalators. Flooring is of quarry tile. In addition to the aesthetic

value, the Transit Authority chose glazed masonry as a means of making the project as graffiti and maintenance free as possible, according to Anthony J. Zotollo, president of the Metropolitan Brick Masonry Council.

Shinick and Alioto are striving to have the masonry so well executed that it will be a real source of pride to commuters, and especially those in the masonry industry, whether from NYC or out-of-town, who use the subway. Cayuga Crimmins is the General Contractor. Chief Architect for the NYC Transit Authority is Peter Poveromo.

TAX BRIEFS

# MAXIMUM TAX

For 1972, the maximum tax on earned income will be 50%. In 1971, the maximum rate was 60%. In service businesses there would appear to be less tax advantage now to changing into a corporate form. It will be necessary for earned income to exceed $52,000 on a joint return or $38,000 on the return of an unmarried individual before the maximum tax can help.

# REVENUE SHARING

While not a tax law per se, the new Revenue Sharing Law will cause some $30 million of federal income tax revenues to be turned over to the states, cities, and other local governments for their use over the next five years. The Government will need the information furnished by taxpayers on their Form 1040 this year in order to determine the actual distribution of revenue-sharing funds. Under the threat of a penalty for their failure to do so, taxpayers are to furnish with their Form 1040 their state, city, locality, and town of residence.
