The beauty and endless opportunities inherent in concrete masonry come to life for all to see in the spectacular new Civic Plaza in Phoenix, Ariz. Adding an exciting chapter to the modern downtown area, this cultural, recreational and convention complex serves as a persuasive example of the infinite scope and open-ended design available with concrete block.
Situated on 16.5 acres, the western-style, $21 complex boasts two major facilities-Symphony Hall and a Convention Center, both joined by a 100-ft.-wide landscaped pedestrian concourse. Symphony Hall can accommodate 2,500 persons and is completely equipped for symphony and theatrical presentations. Wireless headphones are available for the hard of hearing.
The Convention Center can easily handle several conventions or trade exhibits at one time. The main exhibition and assembly halls are separated by a large, movable, acoustical partition. When opened it provides an exhibition area of 120,000 sq. ft. Mezzanine floors include offices and conference rooms, press room, TV, photo lab and employee facilities. An underground parking garage has room for 1,100 cars.
The custom-designed concrete block chosen by architects Charles Luckman Associates was created specifically for this project. John Vickers served as the mason contractor.
