St. Michael Eastern Orthodox Church
Louisville, Kentucky
Architects: H. Carleton Godsey Associates
Mason Contractor: Smith & Silliman
General Contractor: Platoff Construction
One of the most unusual structures in Louisville, Ky., the impressive new St. Michael Eastern Orthodox Church becomes a beacon of color when illuminated at night and stands as a positive example of the ultimate in skills of the bricklaying trade. With its eye-catching array of brick arches, the church is such an outstanding work of masonry that it has become widely known throughout the Louisville area.
Brick used for the structure were the fast-setting type. In addition to the skills needed to cope with this factor, the masonry craftsmen and contractor were constantly challenged in meeting the architects' design and in calling forth their traditional skills to lay out the arches. All involved in the masonry work had to do a little of everything on this job.
The brick are ivory colored and chosen by the architects to suggest the sun-baked look of early Christian churches in the Middle East. Outside and inside, the church is as Byzantine as it is contemporary, and as contemporary as it is Byzantine. The exterior is unmistakenly that of a church of eastern origin, yet the bell tower, from which hymns sound four times a day, is contemporary. The architects, H. Carleton Godsey Associates of Louisville, refer to the design as "Byzantine contemporary."
Mason contractor Smith & Silliman created the structure in conjunction with general contractor Platoff Construction. Smith & Silliman had a dozen or more masonry craftsmen on the wall on an average day.
MCAA members traveling in Kentucky will find a side trip to St. Michael's well worth their time. It's located at 3026 Hikes Lane in Louisville.
It is time to re-empasize the positive. Our aspirations, our activities, our goals and our institutions are subjected to a steady stream of carping, purposeless, destructive criticism. This nation of ours has seen better times and worse times. Our motivation should not derive from gloomy foreboding but, as good Americans, from an abiding sense of obligation to our great nation. Archie K. Davis, President, Chamber of Commerce of the United States.
