Contractors in order to take full advantage of the efficiencies offered by production technology.

Unquestionably, then, a new sense of excitement can already be felt throughout the industry, as the entire process of construction undergoes such dynamic changes. We are learning that what is necessary is a far greater integration of interests-interests of the owner, the design professional, the contractor and the manufacturer and distributor of equipment and materials.

And this integration of interests is necessary not only for the proper functioning of this industry, but its very ability to produce and deliver the structural environment our nation requires.

The owner, public and private, has become the dominant force for this change. And the need for more efficient production, the ability to produce the construction product better, faster and cheaper, is leading to a shifting of roles and responsibilities that will add a new vitality to the entire construction industry and all who share in it.

sion of two structures.

The architects made good use of the warmth of wood-hand-slit cedar shakes on a steeply pitched roof and exposed beams and bare natural wood ceiling inside. The rustic roof, warm red brick, the lines of the roof and abundant planting of yews on three sides also contribute to the residential look.

The most prominent element in the setting is the shelter provided by the giant cottonwood. Its branches extend to a radius of 40 feet to shade the rear entrance and cars in the parking area. Its trunk measures 42 inches in diameter. In return for what the tree contributes to the beauty of the area, open spaces have been left between a flagstone patio to provide as much natural moisture as possible.

The bank reports that it was commended in calls and letters almost daily for the first month of doing business at the new stand. One woman wrote to say that she and her husband operated a garden store under the tree some 20 years ago. "I think what the bank and the designer did is absolutely beautiful," she wrote.

The architects say: "A tree of this size is irreplaceable in our lifetime. Not only does its preservation retain much of the beauty and charm of this location, which holds a warm spot in the hearts of many local residents, but it helped us tremendously by providing a challenge. We are pleased that all who worked with us and the general public have responded so well."
