"Modern Architectural Detailing: Contemporary Architectural Design, Volume 5." Edited by Konrad Gatz. 268 pages; illustrated; 9 x 124; Van Nostrand Reinhold, 450 W. 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10001. $19.95. Just published.
Detailing determines the whole character of a building and in an architect's office has always called for the most careful attention. Like the first four, Detailing 5 was first published in Detail-Zeitschrifi fur Architektur und Baudetail and is a pictorial study of contemporary architecture.
Four main sections are emphasized in this volume: building details, consistency in detailing, details of outdoor installations, and inside detailing. Examples are given from countries as far apart as Japan, Australia, Britain and America. New materials, techniques and methods of construction increase the number of possible solutions to any problem and widen the scope of the architect.
This book shows how some of the leading members of the profession have solved the particular problems with which they were faced, and maintaining a high standard of line drawings and photographs should be an invaluable asset to all those concerned with the design of modern buildings throughout the world.
